If you have oily or acne-prone skin, you've probably come across both Niacinamide and Salicylic Acid as recommended ingredients. They show up in a lot of the same "best for oily skin" lists, which makes it confusing β do you need one? Both? Which one first?
Here's the breakdown.
What Niacinamide Does
Niacinamide (also called Vitamin B3) is a versatile, gentle ingredient that helps with multiple skin concerns at once.
It helps manage the appearance of excess oil without drying out your skin. It helps minimize the look of visible pores. It helps soothe redness and irritation. It supports a more even skin tone and texture. It's gentle enough for daily use, morning and night.
Think of Niacinamide as a balancer. It doesn't aggressively strip or exfoliate β it helps your skin regulate itself. This makes it suitable for sensitive skin types too.

What Salicylic Acid Does
Salicylic Acid is a BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) β a chemical exfoliant. Unlike Niacinamide which works on the surface, Salicylic Acid is oil-soluble, which means it can get inside pores.
It helps unclog congested pores. It helps reduce the appearance of breakouts. It exfoliates from within to help keep skin clearer. It works best on acne-prone, blackhead-prone, and very oily skin.
Salicylic Acid is more targeted and more potent. It's specifically for breakouts and congestion β not a general all-rounder like Niacinamide.

So Which One Do You Need?
Choose Niacinamide if: Your main concern is general oiliness, visible pores, or uneven texture. You want something gentle for everyday use. Your skin is oily but also sometimes sensitive. You're new to active ingredients.
Choose Salicylic Acid if: You get regular breakouts, blackheads, or whiteheads. Your pores feel clogged even after cleansing. You need something more targeted than a general oil-control product. You're comfortable with exfoliating acids.
Choose both if: You want the best of both worlds. Niacinamide in the morning to manage oil throughout the day, and Salicylic Acid at night to work on clearing congestion while you sleep. They can absolutely be used together β just not at the exact same time in the same step.
